Monastery of the Assumption: A History. by Mother Thekla. With a foreword by Archpriest Andrew Louth
"The foundation of a monastery is not to be explained in common-sense terms. As with all things spiritual, the beginning lies beyond our comprehension and if I consider the beginning of our monastery I find myself inevitably going backwards and backwards groping after unrelated threads which yet wind together to the one end: the beginning."
This is how Mother Thekla saw the developing monastic call and it is strange to feel that all the time they were analysing where they were going, the dwellers in the desert of the north felt firmly assured of their direction.
This history is indeed by Mother Thekla but it is obvious that she wrote it for Abbess Maria and Mother Katherine too. Nothing was obvious, nothing was coincidental and yet everything was possible and was made a reality.
